Built just a few years ago in downtown Orlando, Jim Gilchrist’s two-story contemporary home met almost all of his original goals. The home’s spacious floor plan was accentuated by an open staircase that overlooked the two-story foyer. The view of the lake from the back porch was enviable. But Jim knew his home had more potential. He wanted to open up the second floor, replace the glass-accented staircase with something more ageless, add a pool, and be able to enjoy the beautiful lake view from both the first and second floors.
Lucia Custom Home Designers, Inc. called on PSG Construction to help make the most of Jim’s property and carry out his goals. They began by replacing the existing glass-sided staircase with an ageless design that includes an iron handrail and new wood stair treads. An upstairs bathroom was renovated and the tub was converted into a shower.
Playing Up an Outstanding View
Most significant is how the renovation joins the outdoors with the home’s interior. Four sets of French doors on the lower level lead to the covered porch and open the home up to the outdoors. A new pool and pool deck was added to maximize outdoor entertainment and provide an outstanding view. An outdoor kitchen at one end of the porch encourages spontaneous entertaining for Jim, a franchise owner for several area McDonald’s restaurants.
Most dramatic is the sprawling 1000 square foot balcony designed for the second story. French doors accented with sidelights lead from each of the three bedrooms to the balcony. Enclosing the balcony is a metal rail that provides a very clean, contemporary presentation. A spiral staircase connects the balcony to the porch below.
The renovation also included replacing the existing windows, casing, jams, and sills to give Jim the superior grade of windows he desired. Crown moulding was also added in prominent areas of the home to provide a more finished look.
The view at the Gilchrist residence is the most prominent part of this renovation, with a good portion of paradise right at the back door.
